Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the effect of alfuzosin in improving symptoms and impact on quality of life of patients with indwelling double-J ureteral stents.

Materials and Methods: A total of 43 patients, with insertion of a double-J ureteral stent after ureteroscopic stone removal, were prospectively randomized into three groups. In group 1, 16 patients were enrolled and they received prophylactic antibiotics for 3 days. Group 2 included 13 patients who received prophylactic antibiotics for 3 days and 10mg of alfuzosin, once daily for 1 week, and group 3 consisted of 14 patients who received prophylactic antibiotics for 3 days, and phloroglucinol 240mg for a week. All patients completed 10cm linear visual analogue scale (VAS) for evaluating pain, and irritative domain of International Prostate Symptom Scale (IPSS) before ureteral stent removal.

Results: The mean VAS was 3.75 in group 1, 1.77 in group 2 and 3.21 in group 3 (p<0.01). The mean score of frequency in IPSS was 3.63 in group 1, 1.15 in group 2, and 2.86 in group 3 (p<0.01). The mean score of urgency in IPSS was 3.75 in group 1, 1.23 in group 2, and 3.07 in group 3. The mean score of nocturia in IPSS was 2.00 in group 1, 0.69 in group 2, and 0.69 in group 3. The mean score of quality of life in IPSS was 4.81 in group 1, 2.43 in group 2, and 4.36 in group 3.

Conclusions: Alfuzosin improved a subset of ureteral stent-related urinary symptoms and pain.
